94 - a start up journey

I have been "unemployed" for a year! And what a wonderful year it's been!

So bottom line, we always planned for a fourth service line that services medical professionals. We found a way to do that through connection and are pre-launching this service with Active Coaching to introduce our Financial Rx service line. It targets medical and health and wellness professionals, but it is appropriate for entrepreneurs too. Active Coaching and Amplify Advisors are excited to pre-launch our Financial Rx service line, a prescription for financial health. You take care of your...

Week Six Well, today was invoicing day. Since our soft launch on June 27 we have invoiced over $30k. This is well ahead of the plan and it gives me hope beyond hope. Of course I’m not an optimist (nor am I necessarily a pessimist) so the realist kicks in and so does the worry. The worry that we are basically sold out. I’m already booked at 100-125%. That’s more than at Deloitte and way higher than my ideal state. I’m building a business not renting my time. When will I build and sell if...

Week Five An accountant for accountants & now an entrepreneur for entrepreneurs I wanted to spend more time with small/medium business. There were a number of reasons for that, not least of all, the hope that my experience could bring something to them. Bringing the best of the big while still being practical. There has been a pleasant new surprise in all of this. I’ve always been an accountant for accountants. My entire career has basically been serving accountants as clients - as an...

Week Four There is a sweet irony in building a small business while assisting other small business owners at the same time. So much that I’ve learned over the last four weeks would be key to any start-up regardless of their industry. Many times I’ve asked myself why there isn’t someone assisting with this type of work? Why must we re-invent the wheel? On that, with minimal research, I’ve concluded: there likely is but I don’t have the $$$ to pay them so no point finding them it...

Week Three So what’s happened this week? Well, it was Stampede so networking was the goal: http://connectionattheintersection.blog/2018/07/14/taking-off-the-boots-the-end-of-stampede-networking-for-another-year/ I was busy and ended up out and about more than I thought I would. I had to watch the costs more than before (including deciding the family could skip the rodeo and chuck wagons this year). And now that I’m transitioning into being an entrepreneur and I’m focused on building this...

Second week Well, I might have made a mistake! I should have quit my job after Stampede so that I could have scored better tickets and events! Being a new entrepreneur doesn't have the same perks in this area. Having said that, we are half way through Stampede and I’m feeling like the minor activities and events I do have are making it hard to get things done and are wearing me out, so maybe more would have been too much. (For those unfamiliar with the Calgary Stampede -- it is our annual...

Week one - June 27, 2018 The top five “surprises” of my new entrepreneurial experience: 1. Change to routine - big difference, big impact. Every job changes your routine. A new place to park, a new desk, a new team.... it all changes with new employment. But this change is on steroids. I’m working from home and because we won't fully launch the business until the fall, my husband and I decided to reduce childcare costs and tag team with the kids some weeks while working from home. So,...
